Abstract
How was the air transport industry influenced by the low cost carriers’ business model and how will the industry evolve going into the future? Those were some of the questions that summarize the objectives of this study, which final goal is to provide a proposal of improvement to the aforementioned business model, based on the opportunities that the industry presents by itself and how it has evolved in other regions of the world. This theses project analyzes the air transport industry in Chile, focusing on the low cost carriers, Sky Airline S.A. specifically; it is also intended to raise awareness of the exposed theme, along the strategic planning processes and the role of technology and innovation for these companies. In order to do this, a bibliographic investigation and field research were carried out though interviews with operational and management personnel of Sky Airline, so the practical case could be developed. It was concluded that the use of hybrid management models between low-cost and traditional airlines represents an innovation in the market, which is already being applied in more mature markets. This was done after having characterized the low cost carriers, indicating their qualities and carrying out an analysis of the industry and the market in which Sky Airline is inserted. Then, a guide of recommendations for the improvement and implementation of the companies’ strategy was developed. Finally, a series of recommendations for future studies are shown, to give more depth to this ever-evolving industry, which not only have to do with the strategy of low cost carriers, but also the whole air transport system, including airports and other stakeholders.
