Abstract
Information and communication technologies are used in different areas and provide countless benefits, one of them is to ensure information’s security implementing strategies to reduce the risk of an asset, being of particular relevance access control. The aim of this paper is to propose an open source biometric access control solution to be implemented in the electronics department laboratories at the Technical University Federico Santa María. The decision to use fingerprints as biometric trait is argued and existing market's solutions are reviewed, likewise, a low-cost access control system its designed and implemented developing software with open source tools and using generic hardware for educational purpose. The results are discussed with the system's web interface views and photographs of the built access control unit. It is concluded that it is technically and economically feasible to develop an access control system that meets university’s security objectives.
