Abstract
Ecolab is a company dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of chemicals throughout all Chile from the central plant in Santiago from which dispatch to all customers. In the second region - Antofagasta - there is a monthly average demand for 41,000 kg of goods, which is stored in a transit warehouse (this facility is well-stocked from Santiago); here is where to consolidate and distributed 51,2 per cent of the total goods required in the zone. The distribution is performed by contractors. But many times, in order to respond in time to our customers, the distribution tasks are assuming for the sales people, generating hidden costs in the distribution chain. Due to the explosive growth of our sales in the region, specifically in the mining camps food facilities, the distribution of our products has become a problem because of distances from the warehouse, isolated dispatches, the high demand for security, the null standardization of orders and the limited availability of companies with capacity to provide the required distribution service. This generated out time deliveries and high operational costs. Hence, the main objective of this work was to optimize the distribution system for the second region, minimizing operational costs and improving the level of customer service.
