Abstract
This study analyzes the technical and economic feasibility of implementing the Thermo Drain system, a passive greywater heat recovery device, in a single-family dwelling located in the city of Temuco, La Araucanía Region, Chile. Considering local conditions characterized by cold winters, high heating demand, and frequent use of firewood, this technology is proposed as a complementary solution to conventional systems in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce the emission of air pollutants. The methodology consisted of a quantitative theoretical case study in which a 61 m² single-family dwelling was modeled using representative domestic hot water consumption data, including daily showers of 10 minutes, a flow rate of 10 L/min, and a temperature of 38 °C, in addition to a liquefied gas water heater with an efficiency of 88%. Three preheating system configurations were evaluated: Configuration No. 1, in which preheated water is supplied to both the water heater and the shower supply, representing the highest energy efficiency alternative; Configuration No. 2, in which preheated water is directed only to the cold-water inlet of the water heater; and Configuration No. 3, in which preheated water is supplied only to the cold-water line of the shower. Configuration No. 2 was selected because it allows direct integration into the water heater supply while requiring fewer modifications to the existing plumbing network compared to the other alternatives. This configuration maintains a significant thermal transfer efficiency, estimated at 79%. Costs associated with acquisition, importation, installation, and structural modifications were estimated, along with projections of energy savings, return on investment (ROI), and avoided emissions. Results indicate(...).
