Abstract
The present study has the objective of define the energy gap based on renewables resources thathaven’t been exploited in the area of Concón, zone where is sited the petroleum refinery ENAPRefineria Aconcagua (ERA), and to determine the technical and economic feasibility of theimplementation of a power plant based on the renewable resource with better technical/economicperformance. To achieve this objective, a prefeasibility analysis of the exploit of renewablesenergies in the area is made in first instance, this allow to determine which of the multiplesresources are the most apt of implement to the energy matrix of the refinery. This analysisdetermines the more aptitude of the technologies photovoltaic, concentrated solar power, eolic andocean/wave power.Next, a decision matrix is made to determine which of the renewables technologies mentioned is themost suitable to implement. This matrix is based in information about the levelized cost ofelectricity of each renewable energy (LCOE), the presence of national suppliers, the space availableto place a power plant and the availability of the resource. Thanks to this point, is determined thatthe photovoltaic solar energy has the best technical/economic performance in the zone.To determine the feasibility of a photovoltaic power plant in the refinery, a photovoltaic panel isselected to estimate the electric energy generated by it in the zone of study, and the space availablein the property of ERA to place the plant is determined. This calculations determine the totality ofpanels that can be implemented and the total energy generated by the plant, this energy ascend to amagnitude of 22.000 [MWh] by year. This analysis manages to determine the technical feasibilityof a photovoltaic power plant to supply the refinery processes.Later, the financial study of the Project is carried out, with the objective of evaluate its economicfeasibility, determining the values of the relevant economic indicators (NPV and IRR), the totalinvestment cost, the annual savings and the cash flow of the project. This study determines the nonfeasibilityof the project in an immediate horizon due to the negative value of the net present value(USD -9.556.226) and the internal rate of return of 2%.As conclusion, the monitoring of the costs associated to the photovoltaic power plant isrecommended, due to its economic feasibility in an horizon near to 3 years.
