Thesis REDSISMOS: RED DE SENSORES INALÁMBRICOS DE BAJO COSTO PARA EL MONITOREO DE SISMOS(Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, 2015) RAUCH MC DONALD, ALFRED HEINZ; RAUCH MC DONALD, ALFRED HEINZ; Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria UTFSM DEPARTAMENTO DE ELECTRONICA; GROTE HAHN, WALTER; GONZALEZ VALENZUELA, AGUSTINThis project has two parts. The first part deals with the identification, acquisition and implementation of a wireless sensor networks (WSN) platform to monitor disaster events. The selected platform (see www.libelium.com) provides a number of advantages over other alternatives considered: open source code, ability to provide nodes with a variety of sensors for monitoring different disasters situations, short- medium- and long-range communications capabilities, all at a reasonable cost. Subsequently, the project focuses on verifying experimentally that inexpensive 3D accelerometers (MEMS) – which are part of the network nodes – are useful for early warning and monitoring of earthquakes. Experimental tests are performed on a seismic simulator loaded with data of the 27/02/2010 earthquake in Concepción, Chile. Results indicate that these accelerometers measure earth movements with adequate precision and that the nodes are able to successfully transmit the data collected. Therefore we conclude that it is possible to implement a network of sensors using the propsed platform for early warning and monitoring seismic activity. Future work is associated to other topics related to early warning and disaster monitoring for the chosen WSN platform.
