    This paper develops an analytical methodology for calculating the competitive potential of a copper mining operation based on the comparison of operating costs. For this, different levels of analysis are defined based on the depth of the expected result, the amount of data available and the quality of information collected.The competitive potential will be the best position to which can reach an operation, managing all possible savings to bring the expenditure item evaluated the first quartile of the market compared.Operating costs are the result of combining the own conditions of Operations with the management carried out on the different production processes. That cost, which is directly dependent on the structure or configuration of the operation is called non-manageable fraction, instead the cost directly associated with the management of processes is called manageable fraction. The impact of the specific conditions of operations on its cost structure is analyzed in order to model a manageable and non-manageable fraction of cost associated with each item of expenditure. The manageable fraction represents the maximum potential savings of an item of expenditure without destroying value in the operation. The calculation of this fraction avoids overestimating the competitive potential.The developed methodology identifies that expenditure items have potential savings relative to the market, separating these savings in order to improve yields and rates of resource use in order to achieve the potential competitiveness.The results are implemented in a balanced scorecard with all necessary information for decision making at the executive level, in accordance with savings plans to run the company in the medium and long term.
