The growing demand for delay-sensitive digital services requires flexible resource allocation mechanisms in Passive Optical Networks (PONs), especially in the upstream channel, where multiple Optical Network Units share the same transmission medium. In this context, this thesis develops and validates PonLab Simulator, a modular framework for building PON topologies, configuring simulation scenarios, integrating Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithms, and visualizing performance metrics. The tool includes a graphical interface, a simulation engine based on 125 µs polling cycles, support for centralized control through Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and a preliminary integration of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agents. The experimental validation considered a residential G-PON topology with one OLT and eight ONUs, operating at 2.5 Gbps downstream and 1.25 Gbps upstream. Three control paradigms were compared: the GIANT heuristic algorithm, an SDN controller, and the Smart-RL intelligent agent. The results showed that SDN achieved the highest average throughput, reaching 45.607 MB/s, compared with 42.900 MB/s for GIANT and 20.061 MB/s for DRL. Conversely, Smart-RL obtained the best temporal performance, with an average mean delay of 0.593 ms and an average IPDV jitter of 0.069 ms. These results show that PON optimization should not be assessed only through throughput, but also through latency and temporal variability.
