Since the beginning of the 20th century, electricity has become one of the main needs for human development worldwide, both for people and industry, as it is capable of providing lighting, refrigeration, powering equipment that facilitate daily life, such as washing machines, stoves, among others. Despite this, today there are still homes in our country without electricity supply, or it is only partially supplied, which makes it impossible to maintain the current rhythm and way of life. However, for electro-dependent patients, i.e. those who need medical equipment to maintain their vital functions, electricity is a resource on which they are totally dependent, and an interruption of supply can have serious and even fatal consequences. On the other hand, in the case of electro-dependent patients who are hospitalized at home, electricity costs due to their high energy demand can become very high, adding to the fact that in Chile there are still no laws that support families of electro-dependent patients with this type of expenses. Due to these energy uncertainties, together with the high monthly costs of electricity create the need to look for alternatives that can on the one hand ensure a continuous supply of electricity, and on the other hand reduce the cost of electricity services. For this reason, the objective has been to propose a safe, reliable and low environmental impact self-supply system for electro-dependent patients based on solar and wind energy that ensures a 24-hour autonomy, which is adapted to the geographical conditions of the patient. The methodology used corresponds in the first instance to the identification of the most common medical equipment used by electro-dependent patients and their respective electricity consumption, in order to characterize an average consumption profile, also identifying the total energy demand of a home with an electro-dependent patient. With this defined, the levels of radiation and average wind speed in each region of Chile are analyzed, which are called clusters. From this, it is carried out the sizing and technical evaluation of different types of solar, wind and wind-solar installations in each cluster that can cover the demand consumed by the home of an electro-dependent patient, or just the consumption of their medical equipment on a monthly or annual basis. Subsequently, it is made an economic evaluation of each type of dimensioned installation, in order to know the feasibility of its implementation when using consumer credits as a method of financing for the initial investment. Based on the above, the most feasible type of installation for self-supply in each cluster is finally obtained. Based on the results obtained, it is highlighted that implementing an installation that covers the total demand of an electro-dependent patient's home is the most technically and economically feasible solution in most of the clusters, since, as a greater number of photovoltaic panels or wind turbines are needed to generate such energy demand, there will also be a greater amount of energy surplus, which is valued by the electricity distribution companies. In addition, solar and wind-solar installations stand out as those with the highest profitability in most of the clusters. This leads to the conclusion that the use of an electricity generation system based on renewable energies is a feasible solution to ensure a continuous and safe electricity system for electro-dependent patients in areas with and without access to electricity distribution networks.es_CL
