During the last 200 years, Chile has occupied a worldwide leadership place in the mining industry. This position has been achieved by the execution of important mining projects in copper production. However, during their planning and execution phases, complex mining projects do not always achieve the initially set objectives. These problems mainly generate cost overruns, arrears and do not meet the originally planned scope. The present study proposes an information system that serves as a guide tool to give support in the choice of the project control software. A comparative analysis of the characteristics of the main project control software currently available in the market. Then an alternative is presented that is technically and economically more appropriate. The proposed information system allows an analysis of the most important variables for companies that control the execution of their projects. This analysis will be correlated with the international standards of the Project Management Institute (PMI). The system aims to quantify and ponder the most important variables according to the monitoring and control processes suggested by PMI, involving the management of the scope, time, cost, quality, risks, purchases and contracts of the projects. The result of the study is an information system that supports the decision making of the most appropriate project control platform considering the technical and economic needs of the companies. To verify the adequacy of the information system, the system is tested with real projects comparing its results versus the empirical data of each project.eng
