The implementation of the fifth generation (5G) of mobile telecommunications involves great technological challenges. To provide 5G services the following entities are defined: user plane - which is based on the access technology comprising base station and terminal -, the fronthaul plane (FH) - which extends the network services from the base station to the radiant element that interacts with the user terminal - and the backhaul plane (BH), which is the network that interconnects base stations with network nodes. The technical issues related to the development of the BH&FH are the main issues of this project. The promise of providing information transport service in the user plane is based on 3 pillars: a) broadband access; b) low latency and high availability services offer (i. e. assured and immediate connectivity, also named ultra availability in the literature), and c) IoT services, characterized by massive aggregation of low transmission rate devices. The BH is to meet the needs of the three pillars mentioned above for the user plan, based on the requirements to be met for 5 scenarios of coverage area of increasing size (confined space hotspot, urban microcells, urban macrocells, suburban cells and rural cells) and service (enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and high reliability and very low latency (URLLC)). Several authors and organizations of industrial standards have proposed to develop the BH&FH by means of virtual nodes which are configured according to their functional role, which in terms of 5G development is known as Network slicing. The contribution of this project lies in a layer 2 level of the ISO / OSI model network proposal for the BH&FH. Layer 2 services are implemented using the PBB (Provider Backbone Bridge) and PBB-TE (PBB-Traffic Engineering) protocols. We proof that services, the service profiles and the capacities required by the 5GPPP project definitions can be met with this proposal. We also show that the proposed solution allows to meet the OAM&P (Operation, Administration, Managment and Provision) service requirements. We also describe how the virtualization of the architecture based on the ETSI standards can be performed.eng
