The present study seeks to determine the influence of the thermal cut, mainly analyzing the method of plasma cutting in perforations of steel connections of quality ASTM-A36 applying static loads and comparing their performance with common mechanical methods such as punching and drilling. The need for this study comes from the updating of the NCh428 standard that had not been modified since 1957, where the use of thermal cutting methods in bolted connections holes was not applicable. To achieve this objective, seven types of experimental tests were carried out, where different failure modes were induced. In each one, test pieces composed of two plates connected by a bolt were used in order to model a typical bolted connection. The plates have the same geometry in each type of test, but the hole is done with different methods: punching, drilling, standard definition plasma and high definition plasma. The difference in the geometry of the specimens of each of them allows to induce different failure modes, applying a tensile load provided by the MTS 810 tensile testing machine. After the study (using a total of 84 specimens), it was observed that the use of high definition plasma for the manufacture of holes in the connections of the specimens, presents a similar performance to drilling and punching, obtaining a coefficient of variation in resistances for the different methods, less than 5% in all the tests. This allowed us to conclude that when applying static loads there is no significant difference in the resistance of the failure modes analyzed when using the different methods.eng
