APLICABILIDAD DE CELDAS DE COMBUSTIBLE A BASE DE HIDRÓGENO EN LA AVIACIÓN COMERCIAL.
Abstract
This report aims to make an introduction to the future energy problems that the commercial aviation industryin the world will face. Problems related to the consumption and generation of electric power inside aircraft, where alternatives that are currently in full development and that can become the solution for the next yearswill be reviewed.Basic concepts related to the operation of the engines of an airplane and its participation in the generationof energy will be identified together with the expense that this produces and its impact on the environment. The participation of the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in this whole process will also be studied and how it ispossible to achieve cost eciencies from the replacement of this unit through the incorporation of fuel cellsbased on hydrogen (Fuel Cells ). Analysing the reliability of today’s main models used worldwide, initiallydimensioning the cost of maintaining this element in the field of commercial aviation.Understanding the theory behind the Fuel Cells, the level of reliability and maintainability that exist for acommon APU will plan the conceptual incorporation of a SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cells) in a passenger aircraft, the idea is to size the unit according to The necessary operation requirements and the main componentsof the new battery are described. The economic and financial context in which the aeronautical industry operates will be reviewed, understandingits main costs and benefits, the level of investment that is generated along with the main indicatorsor parameters that will help to understand the potential future incorporation of this new technology. . Inaddition to the economic evaluation of the Fuel Cell project and the corresponding analysis of sensibility thatallows to verify the convenience of adopting this new technology in replacement of the traditional APU.At the end of the investigation it will be possible to conclude the following:1. Fuel Cells are a valid alternative in the generation / production of electrical energy from an electrochemicalreaction that uses Hydrogen and Oxygen, and whose only product of the reaction is water andheat.2. The eciency achieved by the FC exceeds 40% along with a considerable decrease in the total weightof the battery (and the aircraft itself) together with the total pollution emissions (greenhouse gases) arereduced by almost 620 tons of CO2 per year.3. The economic evaluation allows to support this technology, under a discount rate of 10% and recoveryof the capital invested at the end of the fourth year of execution of the project.4. At the end of the life of the project (10 years) all the capital invested is recovered, obtaining additionalbenefits.
