PLATAFORMA DE MEDICIÓN DE CORTE BASAL PARA ESTRUCTURAS A ESCALA REDUCIDA
Abstract
The objectives of this work were designing and constructing a base shear measurement system for scale models to be used on the shaking table of the Earthquake Simulation Laboratory at UTFSM.The system consists of a rigid platform positioned on a set of steel rods oriented in different directions. Each rod has an accurate force transducer incorporated near its middle part and low friction hinges at its ends. The platform has a matrix of threaded holes which allow to grab firmly the model test at the desired position. Also, there is a base plate which keeps all components together and allows the easy installation or uninstallation of the system on the shaking table.Weight of massive lead ballast pieces placed on models, entails important friction forces that interfere with horizontal force measurements. One of the main concerns of this work was to keep friction forces low enough to minimize the problem.Several 1/10 scale metal structures, some of them seismically isolated, were used for testing the platform. The tests were performed under scaled earthquakes records and sinusoidal base movements. Signals from force transducers and other instruments were entered into a high speed data acquisition system (with simultaneous sampling and hold), and then transferred to a computer, where base shear, overturning moment and other variables of interest were calculated. Forces and accelerations were also measured in other places of the structure. Cross checking of all the information yielded that base shear and base moment were being determined correctly. The system developed in this work allowed accurate measurements of base shear and overturning moment even under large vertical loads. Furthermore, the flexibility of its design made possible to change components easily, according to tests requirements.
