In our country, the pavement type selection is often done through the option with lowest minimum direct initial costs. This selection method, does not consider the maintenances and conservations that probably will be executed in the future, which results in long-term greater resource consumption.Accordingly, in this report it is posed to implement a life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA), with the different pavement design methods which are valid or used in Chile (AASHTO 93, AASHTO 98, MEPDG, OPTIPAVE and MOP asphalt design); for four traffic volumes and three ground quality levels, in the Central Zone of the country. To get the different paving maintenances/preservations, the software HDM-4 version 2.08 had to be adjusted for a period of twenty years. Through a series of failure criteria (such as IRI, cracking, faulting, among others) the standard conservations executed on the pavements in Chile, are possible to determine. Finally, with the current prices used by the Government, the initial cost and the life-cycle cost is obtained for each one of the paving alternatives. The results of the obtained thicknesses are shown for the different layers that conform a flexible or rigid pavement. Besides, the initial costs for each of the road alternatives are exposed. At the same time, the life-cycle cost analysis is presented for each traffic level, adjusted to an exponential curve, where the previously mentioned data is referred to the respective real discount rates utilized. For both cost analyses, the comparative is developed when considering the asphalt prices of 2008 and the current year, 2015, in order to analyze the effect the increasing oil prices have on asphalt. It is concluded that the price of the asphalt layers is not easy to determine or predict, as it is related to the fluctuations in oil prices, which greatly affect the initial and life cycle costs. For concrete pavement, it is necessary to design, for medium and high traffic, considering the realization of conservations like diamond grindings, or the implementation of dowels. Finally, the usage of high discount rate taxes, encourages the making of roads with lowest possible initial costs.eng
