EVALUACIÓN DE LA VIABILIDAD DE FOMENTO DE LA COMPETITIVIDAD DEL SECTOR DOMÉSTICO EN EL MERCADO DE TRANSPORTE AÉREO DE PASAJEROS CANADIENSE.
Abstract
At 2016, there are two big participants in the Canadian domestic airline market: Air Canada y WestJet. The first one, a national airline, with both domestic and international routes, and the second one, an airline that started operations under the low cost model but has evolved and expanded to international transatlantic routes, adopting a hybrid model that combines both strategies. There were airlines that tried to enter the market under the low cost model (Jetsgo, Roots Air y Greyhound Air) but they did not succeed (neither of them lasted more than a year on the market). Nowadays there are three airlines wanting to reintroduce the low cost model into the local market. Each airline has a different focus and strategies and, because of this, has different barriers of entry that will not let them start operating regularly. One of them, the one that has created more discussion, is the legal restriction to foreign property in the country which states that an airline operating domestic routes can only be 25% foreign owned. The duopoly in the market affects both the users of air transport, since they don’t have more economic options to travel within the country or region, and the new participants entering the market, who have to surpass high barriers of entry and a though internal rivalry (Air Canada and WestJet control 85% of domestic airline market). The main objective of this investigation is, first, to study and describe the current situation of the Canadian domestic airline market. Second, to study and describe the Australian domestic airline market so they can later be compared and important differences can be highlighted in order to find the reasons that are slowing down the development of a low cost airline market in the country. Changes to the current market will arise and their impacts will be studied.
