DETERMINACIÓN NUMÉRICA DEL EFECTO DEL FACTOR DE ELONGACIÓN DE LOS POROS SOBRE LAS PROPIEDADES MECÁNICAS DE ESPUMAS DE TITANIO OBTENIDAS MEDIANTE RUTAS PULVIMETALÚRGICAS, PARA APLICACIONES BIOMÉDICAS
Abstract
This report studies the effect of morphology and porosity over the mechanicproperties of titanium foam. This research can be of use considering the potential ofsuch material for replacing bone structures, as it can lessen stress-shieldingphenomena, caused by current prostheses. This problem consists of the reabsorptionof the bone due to the prosthesis holding most of the weight. Further, this studyallows for the reduction of costs for further experimentation. To achieve this, titanium foams are compressed using a commercial software of finiteelements called Ansys Workbench. The 63 models tested have different sizes, poreelongation factors, and percentage of porosity. Furthermore, the same boundaryconditions and the same material properties used on the experimental tests (the oneswhich are compared to the simulations results) are applied. The results of the displacement can be used to calculate the deformation, the Young’smodule and the yield stress of the simulation. The results show that the size of themodel does not have an influence on the mechanic properties. In addition, theYoung’s module, the yield stress and the maximum effort diminish while thepercentage of the porosity increases. Moreover, the morphology of the pores has aslightly influence on the results. Consequently, the more elongation the moreYoung’s module correlation, and yield stress vs. porosity. Finally, the possible titanium foams for the replacement of the bone structures aredefined. It is important to highlight that the simulations are effective, because theirresults are similar to the experimental data from the ultrasound test.
